Summary of the technology

Researchers from the University of Burgos have developed a methodology for the deoxygenation of sulfur compounds (sulfoxides). To carry out this transformation, natural compounds from the biomass and a molybdenum catalyst are used. The products are obtained with high yields and high purity.

Details of the Technology Offer

New and innovative aspects

The reduction of sulfoxides (1) to the corresponding sulfides (2) is a very useful transformation both in the chemical industry and in the pharmaceutical industry.

There are several methods to carry out this transformation, however, the procedure patented by the University of Burgos allows obtaining these compounds quickly, efficiently and and sustainably, using a novel reducing agent and a molybdenum catalyst. The reaction conditions make the purification of the final compounds extremely easy.

Main advantages of its use

The main advantages of this method are the following:
- Use of natural compounds, monoterpenes from biomass, environmentally benign and sustainable.
- Monoterpenes act as a solvent, reducing costs and their by-products can be easily removed.
- The products are obtained with yields greater than 75% and high purity.
- The transformation does not require an inert atmosphere and is completed in two hours by heating to 160 ºC.
- High tolerance of functional groups.

Specifications

The monoterpenes obtained from the biomass are used in equimolar amounts, acting both as reducing agents and the solvent. The dioxomolybdenum (VI) compound, MoO2Cl2(dmf)2, is added in catalytic amounts (5 mol%) and is responsible for accelerating and facilitating the process.
The by-products obtained in the reaction are p-cymene and water, which allows the purification of the deoxygenated product quickly and easily, without the need to resort to complex separation techniques.
The low toxicity of the reagents used allows the reaction to be carried out with a higher degree of safety and from a more environmentally friendly point of view.

Applications

This technology has direct application in the chemical industry and the pharmaceutical industry.
