Summary of the technology

Bac3Gel develops and distributes advanced substrates to harness the full power of microorganisms.
Bac3Gel substrates are the first that combine three-dimensionality with gradients of oxygen, nutrients and physical properties to allow the growth of complex microbial communities and currently unculturable bacteria that depend on these microenvironments to thrive. Bac3Gel substrates aim to revolutionise the status quo of microbiology to unlock innovative bacteria-based solutions to solve challenges across multiple bio-based applications.
Our mission is to provide a new standard for microbial culture to ultimately foster the discovery of new antibiotics and bio-based solutions to feed the ever-growing demand for bio-based innovative treatments, as well as the development of microbiome-modulating drugs to address 90% of diseases linked to human microbiome dysbiosis.

Details of the Technology Offer

Bac3Gel represents a paradigm shift in culturing and maintaining microorganisms, unveiling new and disruptive opportunities for advancements in microbiology and bio-based fields. Common state-of-the-art 2D substrates technologies are limited since they lack: the necessary chemical environment; the 3D structure that enables bacteria migration towards their ideal microenvironment; and the presence of different levels of oxygen to be compatible with aerobic, microaerophilic and anaerobic bacteria simultaneously and thus the growth of complex microbial communities.

Bac3Gel substrates exhibit, in a single structure, 3D gradients that match the natural environment of different microorganisms, allowing them to grow in familiar conditions. This, allied with Bac3Gel’s technological tunability, provides new culturing opportunities for advanced fields such as synthetic biology that were not viable before, without requiring additional equipment to operate.

Our substrates provide a new way for fundamental knowledge in microbiology to evolve, but also forpharma and biotech to produce and test innovative drug candidates, food supplements, microbiome-modulating molecules and antibiotics.
