Summary of the technology

A computer-implemented method for predicting whether a subject is likely to develop Behavioural Addiction (BA). The method consists of a neurophysiologic measurement of the subject in response to incentive processing.

Details of the Technology Offer

BA consists of addictive behaviours in which the object of addiction is a behaviour instead of a substance. Some medical conditions predispose to the development of BA. For example, the use of Dopamine Agonists (DA) or Dopamine Replacement Therapy (DRT) in Parkinson's Disease (PD). PD patients usually do not respond well to DRT, on the contrary, DRT may worsen or even cause some non-motor symptoms. It will contribute not only to identifying if patients prescribed with DRT have low or high BA risk but also, to finding a balance when using DA to control the treated disorder. Therefore, the method could allow avoiding, changing or reconsidering the dose of DA drugs that might have been recommended to avoid a potential development of BA.

Current development status: the method has been already validated with patients and shows promising results. Nonetheless, the next step would be to complement the method with a medical device that integrates the software and the neurophysiological measurement. This is currently under development.

About Biomedical Research Center Sant Pau (IIB)

The Sant Pau Institute of Biomedical Research (IIB Sant Pau) is a research centre that holds 9 different entities grouped under one name for strengthening collaborative translational research and for bridging the gap between basic research and clinical practice so as to ultimately improve patient care.

The different entities are based on the Sant Pau Biomedical Campus, where other entities, such as the Barcelona Health Hub (BHH), are working together in the health sector. The most tangible benefits of this collaborative environment are the application of technology to health, and the scientific dissemination of these discoveries.

Members of the IIB Sant Pau:
- Fundació Institut de Recerca de l’Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau
- Fundació de Gestió Sanitària de l’Hospital de la Sant Creu i Sant Pau
- Fundació Privada de l’Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau
- Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
- Fundació Puigvert
