The patent-protected compound (SS-31) has shown beneficial effects on a murine model of an aneurysm, where it was capable of inhibiting the development of aortic aneurysms and increasing a 20% survival rate by targeting specifically mitochondrial stress.
An aneurysm is the enlargement of an artery caused by weakness of the arterial wall. At their most severe stage, aneurysms can rupture, leading to life-threatening internal bleeding with lethality of 80 %. The annual incidence of new AAA diagnoses is approximately 0.4 to 0.67% in Western populations. This equates to 2.5 to 6.5 aneurysms per 1000 person-year.
