Summary of the technology
Coli and C. jejuni, respectively coming from Luxembourg and bordering countries is maintained at LIST. These isolates come from bird and mammal faeces, poultry, slaughterhouse effluents, wastewater and surface water. Among this collection, 1246 isolates are characterised by their MLST profile, 381 are fully sequenced and the antibiotic resistance profile of 206 isolates have been evaluated by antibiograms.
Metadata (description of the origins and date of sampling) are also available for all the isolates. This collection and its characterisation are still in development.
Details of the Technology Offer
Background:
Campylobacter spp. is the most common cause of foodborne bacterial gastroenteritis. Its prevalence is today higher than that of Salmonella. Determining the strain diversity, which is high in Campylobacter spp., is key for understanding the circulation of this bacteria among human and animal populations.
Benefits:
Living collection is beneficial by allowing e.g. testing of innovative characterisation technique such as MALDI-tof for the detection of antibiotic resistance in Campylobacter or the efficiency of phage therapy in Campylobacter.
Applications:All research projects requesting a large collection of environmental isolates of Campylobacter spp.
Opportunity:A priority research topic for LIST is the development of a corresponding collection of phages infecting Campylobacter.
