Summary of the technology

This software makes the use of the computer possible to a number of disabled individuals. It shows on the computer’s screen a configurable interface where the user has access to all keyboard and mouse functionalities.
It is presented as a scanner keyboard where the active key is moving through rows and columns at a configurable speed. In its journey the active key encounters the mouse functions and other useful keys as well.
When the user wants to select the active key the click function has to be performed. The way it is performed is also configurable: mouse click, a specific key on the keyboard, the space bar, any key… Once the key has been selected it works as it had been press on the real keyboard or mouse and the active key keeps going to give the user access the rest of the functions on the screen on a round basis.

Details of the Technology Offer

New and innovative aspects

There many scanning keyboards on the market. What makes our product different from the rest is its highly configurable character.

This was a major objective when we decided to tackle this challenge as it was mainly intended to help people suffering from cerebral palsy. These patients are affected by the disease in many different forms either physically, intellectually or both. For this reason, the program had to be very flexible.

Main advantages of its use

Due to its flexibility, this product can be used by many users affected by different diseases. It was designed for cerebral palsy but its use can be extended to many other disabilities. As stated before, it has two major utilities:

  • As a training tool used by therapists to train patients on the use of the computer, to teach them how to write, etc.
  • For the disabled population to make the computer more accessible to them

Specifications

The application program can be installed in any computer running under Windows XP or latter. As stated before, the software is highly configurable for two reasons:

  • To provide adaptability for any user whatever his or her mobility impairments may be.
  • To adapt it to any application the user may want to control or to any kind of training on the use of the computer. What the users sees on the screen can vary in size, color, speed of the active key’s displacement, etc. It is also possible to decide which keys are to be displayed: all letters, vowels only, consonants only, numbers, mouse, etc. The way the keyboard is scanned can also be configured: rows after columns or vice versa.

Sound can also be added so the computer “tells” where the active key is located at any moment. This is especially useful to people with low or null eyesight.

Applications

According to statistics, the number of disabled people in Spain is up to 3,8 millions, what means nearly 9% of the population. Among them, 120.000 are affected by cerebral palsy. The intensity of the disease varies. There are individuals who are able to conduct a normal lifestyle whereas some others are totally dependent on other persons on a daily basis. The application itself can be used by this percentage of the total population. There are different user profiles though:

  • Individuals, men or women, who have a computer at home.
  • Associations, foundations and social services.
  • State or private schools where disabled students may be present
