Summary of the technology

LIST is developing an optimisation software prototype to address this complexity issue. More particularly, it uses process integration methods, formulated as operation research model, to generate optimal system configurations. Complementary, steam and ORC turbine models as well as other key components are modelled as input data to the optimisation algorithm. Finally, input and output data treatment algorithms, combined with their respective Graphical User Interfaces, structure the necessary information for the tool.

Details of the Technology Offer

Background:

Industrial waste heat is a relevant resource to be valorised to target climate change and set up new business models for industries. One valorisation opportunity is to produce electricity from this excess heat (heat-to-power solution).

So far, heat-to-power projects have solely focused on single processes generating waste heat, although large production plants (steel, chemical, glass, etc.) have several sources which could also be valorised. However, optimising the design of the electricity production system at plant scale is very complex, as a very large number of interrelated parameters need to be quantified. Due to the complexity, heuristic approaches are unsatisfactory, as they would be very time-consuming and the generation of the best configuration is uncertain.

Benefits:

Compared with heuristic approaches, the Heat2Power software prototype allows faster system design generation. Also, by using an operations research approach, the solutions generated are optimal, or at least very close to it.

Applications:

The prototype is currently developed in close collaboration with a partner from the steel industry. However, the running principles of waste heat recovery and electricity production by steam or ORC turbine, as well as thermoelectric generators, are generally applicable. The deployment to other industrial sectors is, as such, feasible with no important further developments.

Opportunity:

We are looking to get in touch with the following actors:

  • Industries with waste heat, interested in deploying heat -to-power solutions
  • Manufacturers, energy service and software companies for using and sublicensing our tool

IP Status:The tool is a 100% development by LIST. However, it relies on the IBM CPLEX solver, for which a paying licence is necessary.
