Summary of the technology

The use of melatonin is proposed as a co-treatment of tumours and to alleviate the adverse side effects derived from other more invasive treatments. Melatonin administration by intratumoral injection and in high doses promotes the activation of mitochondrial function, ultimately causing the death of cancer cells.

Details of the Technology Offer

Current cancer treatments are based on the use, isolated or combined, of surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. These therapies are associated with the development of adverse side effects in the patient in the short and long term. Some of the most common types of cancer (such as head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, HNSCC) have an increasing incidence and mortality in the population, that together with other limitations, such as the absence of an early diagnosis that prevents the development of the disease towards more advanced stages and drug resistance, reveal the urgency to find and identify new therapeutic agents with greater efficacy and less toxicity.

Our technology presents a pharmaceutical composition that comprises a high dose of melatonin which, after intratumoral administration, is useful in tumor treatment. In high concentrations, melatonin exerts an oxidative effect, and increases the production of free radicals through the activation of mitochondrial function and, as a consequence, by activating apoptotic mechanisms in tumor cells.

The use of this composition is a treatment method that leads to the elimination of the tumor, the time increase of the disease progression and survival rate, as well as allowing long-term disease control.

ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS:

  • Effective therapy with fewer side effects. The high concentration of melatonin generates an effective therapeutic response related to the elimination of the tumor, without aggravating the appearance of other side effects.
  • Most appropriate route of administration.Intratumoral administration promotes the reduction of tumour volume.
  • It allows reducing recurrences in cancer treatment, as well as resistance to oncostatic treatments.
  • Oxidative effect for tumor elimination.Contrary to its usual antioxidant function, the proposed high doses exert an oxidizing effect that contributes to the formation of free radicals and the activation of cancer cell death.
