Summary of the technology

The most remarkable advantages provided by this technology are:
o Simplicity and versatility of the kit, which allows carrying out a high throughput screening or in situ analysis with very short analysis times.
o Low analysis cost, since dyes, organic solvents that generate residues and instrumental equipment are not used.
o High sensitivity of the method, that detect anionic surfactant concentration lower than the maximum residue limit established in most of the environmental legislation.

Description of the tech for sale

Currently, there are different quantitative methods for determining anionic surfactant in water (household, industrial or wastewater and saline water) based on instrumental techniques (chromatography, electrochemistry, spectrometry, etc.). These techniques are expensive and require of expert analysts. Commercial kits use dyes that interact with anionic surfactants. Organic solvents are employed to remove excess dye and surfactant concentration is determined by colorimetric measurements -generally using a spectrophotometer-. Therefore, the use of these kits implies the generation of residues and needs of instrumental laboratory equipments that increases the analysis cost. Researchers from University of Valencia have developed a fast and simple method to determine anionic surfactants in water.

Specifications

This method is sensitive enough for detecting surfactant concentration lower than the maximum residue limit established in most of the environmental legislation. Visual detection is achieved by measuring the disappearance time (or the thickness) of the foam ring formed after the addition of a pH buffer and a foam enhancer to a water sample. The new kit detects the presence of an anionic surfactant in the field since laboratory measurement equipment and toxic organic solvent are not used.

Main advantages of its use
