Summary of the technology

One of the main advantages of this technology is using an industrial residue avoiding its deposition. Yearly, in Portugal, the production of eggshell waste is about 2600 tones which mean a cost about 122 Euros/ton for transport and treatment. The economical interest for an industrial unit that produces eggshell derivates is very relevant. For a ceramic unit there is the chance to enlarge the possibility of using a calcium residue substituting calcite, the traditional raw material, more expensive, without affecting final ceramic properties.

Description of the technology

The main goal of present invention is the industrial application of eggshell waste avoiding all the environmental problems of deposing it in a landfill. The advantage of this process is showing that is possible to enlarge the application fields of the residue substituting traditional raw material, calcite, for a low cost material. The University is looking for slurry ceramic preparation industrial units as well as derivative egg industrial units in order to optimize this technology and be able to implement it in an industrial scale.

Specifications

The present technology consists of using eggshell waste as well as the process to transform it in a way that it can be used in ceramic industry. We have incorporated eggshell waste in ceramic slurry and processed it according to a specific protocol that includes a 3 cycle cooking phase. After cooking, ceramic bodies show characteristics such as porosity, water absorption and linear retraction with adequate values fulfilling industrial exigencies.

Main advantages of its use

  • for ceramics industry it offers the possibility of using a raw material cheaper than the traditional used
  • it uses a residue that is normally seen as waste, avoiding therefore its deposition
  • to egg derivative industry it transforms a cost into a financial benefit

Applications

  • This technology has applications both for ceramic industry as well as to food industry, namely for those that use lots of eggs or produce egg derivatives.
