This technology employs biochar as an adsorbent with two critical roles: providing a robust platform for methanotrophic biofilm growth and temporarily adsorbing methane to increase its availability to the bacteria. Key benefits include
• Higher Yields: Enhanced methane contact increases the production of ectoine, bioplastics, methanol, and single-cell proteins compared to existing methods.
• Sustainability: Utilizing methane as a substrate reduces greenhouse gas emissions, offering an eco-friendly alternative to glucose-based processes.
•Economic Efficiency: Lower capital and operational costs due to reduced agitation and gas sparging requirements.
Methane, a potent greenhouse gas with a short atmospheric half-life, significantly impacts climate change. Utilizing methanotrophs—bacteria that metabolize methane—presents a dual opportunity: reducing methane emissions and producing valuable bioproducts like ectoine, bioplastics, methanol, and single-cell proteins.
Current methods, hindered by methane's low solubility in water, are not commercially viable due to inefficient contact between methane and methanotrophs. Our innovative solution leverages an adsorbent-based biotechnology system to enhance methane bioavailability and methanotrophic activity, aiming to create a sustainable, high-yield production platform for these bioproducts.
Further research required
Currently, in the early developmental stages (TRL 2), the project aims to progress to TRL 3 by 2024 and TRL 4 by 2027. Funding is secured until 2027, with potential extensions. The team is seeking partnerships and additional funding to expand research into bioplastics productionand other commercial bioproducts.
