Summary of the technology

Investigate and design a new structure of ducted horizontal axis wind turbines ordered in a line with an integrated passive flow control mechanism to vortices generation behind ducted wind turbines and to achieve optimum performance in wind energy harvesting in regions with low wind speed.

The ducted wind turbines in the proposed design can be a big additive to other renewable energy sources and can be an alternative to the less efficient common types of wind turbines since they are adaptable to environments and produce higher amounts of energy, which makes use of wind energy as a clean, practical, economical, and environmentally friendly available alternative. The diffuser-augmented wind turbine (DAWT) turbine is being looked at as a way to increase the production of wind energy in low wind speed regions.

The proposed design will be a good solution as:
1. Producing a maximum possible limit of energy in regions with low wind speeds that consider one of the challenges that restrict spreading techniques generation of energy from wind in mentioned regions.
2-Work as a micro-compact wind farm, which can be suitable for installation in small areas; the common types of wind farms with horizontal axis wind turbines need a large area to be installed because of the wake phenomenon behind wind turbines.
3. The proposed model will be friendly to wildlife and birds, and it will operate with a minimum limit of noise.
4: A suitable solution to support energy systems in buildings, trains, long vehicles, and ships as a source for energy in remote areas, as renewable energy, and as a supporter for efforts to reduce the dependency on fossil fuel sources.

Details of the Technology Offer

This design would permit the generating of wind energy and work at low wind speeds, with the possibility of installation in small areas. This proposed design won't need a long distance between the ducted turbines, while it is a necessary aspect when designing traditional bare horizontal wind turbine farms that the distance between turbines is in the range of 5D-7D to avoid wake traces effects on turbines (in our study the distance between each turbine and the other was 1.5D). This comes with a potential total generated energy from the proposed design reaching to about 6 times the energy generated from the same structure but with a bare wind turbine. The proposed structure can integrate ducted and bare wind turbines, ordered as ducted wind turbines followed by bare ones, and this order gave us a very good result when making a comparison with a structure consisting of only bare wind turbines. One of the significant features of this design is that the second, third, and fourth turbines will produce power greater than the first turbine.

This invention includes building and developing the design of the ducted wind turbines suitable for building a small farm consisting of small or medium-sized ducted horizontal wind turbines, which could be built as modular units in a factory and installed in small areas to be a source for renewable energy and one of the solutions to support the transformation toward reduction of CO2 emissions by a gradual decommission for traditional power plants. This invention adopts the development of a passive flow control mechanism integrated into the structure of ducted turbines to enhance flow shape and speed of flow behind the turbine, where these factors play an important role in determining farm layout and limiting the production of energy from wind.
