- Minimally invasive transdermal device for delivering an antimicrobial to skin at access point of interstitial fluid sampling, medical monitoring, and/or transdermal drug delivery.
- Mitigates risk of infection at surgical and other wound sites.
- Can deliver multiple antimicrobials to the site at the same time. Antimicrobials can be delivered on-demand or through the use of a hand-held device, or as scheduled through patch design.
OVERVIEW
A device for introducing at least one antimicrobial in an exposed region of a user's skin includes a substrate having thereon at least one electrically controllable microheating element for forming a micropore in the user's skin. A nanofiber mat loaded with at least one antimicrobial material is arranged on the substrate such that it contacts the user's skin and encircles an opening of the micropore formed by the microheating element.
BACKGROUND
There is an ongoing need for mitigation of infection risks resulting from the use of minimally invasive medical devices. Various microorganisms and/or microbes may reside on the user’s skin and/or on the devices and can migrate through the interstitial fluid access location of such devices and cause infections. Some of these microorganisms include drug-resistant bacteria, also called superbugs, which are increasingly resistant to known antibiotics.
