- A foldable, manually transportable solution with low power requirements, ideal for under-resourced settings and emergency situations.
- Combining body temperature regulation and full resuscitation capabilities, the device significantly increases newborn survivability in resource-constrained environments
- Overcoming the limitations of heavy and expensive infant warmers, this solution provides a cost-effective and easily transportable option for both developing and developed countries
OVERVIEW
The Portable Infant Warmer, developed by Georgetown researchers, is a foldable and manually transportable device designed for neonatal care, particularly in under-resourced settings. Its low power requirements and solar power capabilities address the critical need for efficient, portable, and affordable infant warming solutions. The device regulates body temperature and enables full resuscitation, significantly improving newborn survivability.BACKGROUNDIn underdeveloped regions, hypothermia at birth poses a significant risk to newborns, leading to morbidity and mortality. Existing infant warmers are often heavy, non-portable, and costly, limiting their accessibility, especially in ambulances and low-budget healthcare environments. The Portable Infant Warmer overcomes these challenges by offering a foldable, transportable solution with low power consumption, making it suitable for home deliveries and emergency situations.
Benefit
● The Portable Infant Warmer offers a rapid warm-up time of approximately 3-4 minutes, crucial for addressing hypothermia and reducing infant morbidity.
● Portable and Foldable - The collapsible design with wheels and a handle ensures easy transportation within ambulances, saving crucial time in emergency situations.
● Low Power Consumption - Its efficient Calrod heater consumes less power during startup and operation, making it suitable for low-resource settings and ambulances.
● Featuring a non-stitch biocompatible mattress, the device minimizes infection risks, eliminating the need for a mattress cover.
● Beyond temperature regulation, the warmer facilitates critical thermal, cardiac, and pulmonary resuscitation, enhancing newborn survivability.
Market Application
● Ensures affordable neonatal care in resource-limited areas, maintaining newborns' body temperature to reduce morbidity and prevent hypothermia-related mortality.
● It facilitates neonatal care and resuscitation, enhancing newborn survivability in critical emergency situations.
● Versatile tool in hospital neonatal units, offering efficient body temperature regulation and full resuscitation capabilities with a collapsible design for optimized space and accessibility.
