OVERVIEW
This invention is a comprehensive non-clinical ophthalmic assistant curriculum designed to provide foundational knowledge for ophthalmic assistants. The curriculum is structured into six modules, including lectures, quizzes, tests, and a final examination. Initially delivered through face-to-face instruction, it is adaptable for online-distance learning. This curriculum enables quick deployment of new ophthalmic assistant courses, addressing the educational gap for on-the-job trained assistants who are not IJCAHPO® certified. This resource facilitates the development of skilled, certified assistants, contributing to improved patient care in ophthalmology.
BACKGROUND
The field of ophthalmology requires highly skilled assistants, yet many are trained on-the-job without formal certification. This curriculum addresses the need for standardized, formal education in ophthalmic medical assisting, providing a structured program that bridges the gap between on-the-job training and formal certification. The Georgetown Program has a long history of leading in ophthalmic technician training, and this curriculum continues that tradition by offering a robust, adaptable educational resource.
