Centimeter-scale fabric jacketed elastomeric tubing with self-regulating distension in the radial direction which provides passive fluid flow regulation and can prevent asymmetric aneurysms in pressurized elastomeric tubes.
Have potential application in biomedical “exomuscles”, massage therapy implements, or soft robotic actuators for various industrial purposes.
University of Alberta researchers have developed a highly tunable design for centimeter-scale elastomeric tubing wrapped with a knit fabric jacket which self-regulates fluid flow while also preventing aneurysm-like asymmetric rupture of the tube. This technology allows for passive flow regulation and in contrast to vast majority of jacketed elastomeric tubing devices which operate on the scale of a few millimeters, the jacketed elastomeric tube has a size on a 0.1 to 1000 centimeters. The technology has been tested under hydrostatic pressure on a custom-built hydraulic flow loop. The jacketed tubing is initially very compliant when first pressurized, but displays marked self-regulation behavior at high pressures that is not present in bare elastomeric tubes as a result of the stiffening of the fibres in the fabric as the underlying elastomeric tubing distends.
