Details of the Technology Offer

OVERVIEW

Georgetown researchers have developed a system to diagnose and monitor disease progression through human gait analysis. The system uses inexpensive wearable sensors and advanced algorithms to aid people with Parkinson's disease or related disorders.

BACKGROUND

The simple act of walking requires intimate coordination between the human nervous system and the bones, muscles, and connective tissues that keep us upright, balanced, and moving forward. A wide range of disease states and injuries can result in measurable changes in gait or walking motions. The close relationship between gait and disease has made gait analysis an accessible and increasingly accurate diagnostic tool for disease progression and monitoring.

Benefits

  • The technology enables continuous at-home monitoring for Parkinson's and stroke recovery, eliminating the need for traditional clinic visits.
  • Sensing technology used by this system is available off the shelf commercially at low cost and can be placed in the patient’s pocket or in/on their shoes.
  • The advanced algorithm used to detect changes in gait can be stored in a smartphone app, which relays information to the healthcare provider regularly*.

Applications

  • Monitoring of Parkinson’s patients and patients with related disorders for disease progression
  • Monitoring of patients recovering from injuries or surgery
  • Integrated wearable sensor suite with smartphone readout for patients and providers
