Desired outcome

BIC is looking for advanced computer simulations that can accurately model the process of shaping small metal parts.

Cold forming is a key step in the manufacturing of ballpoint pen tips, which poses technical constraints on the raw material such as low inclusion content and small dimensional variation. Numerical simulations have been identified as a promising tool to identify the most suitable tool geometry to perform the cold forming operation, allowing thus both to increase the tooling lifetime and to expand the materials compatible with it.

The group has an extensive hands-on experience in cold forming but has not yet explored the use of numerical simulations in this context. By making the process less sensitive to the raw material characteristics, the group can broaden its supply sources, reduce the operating costs, and introduce new materials with a view to comply with the anticipated strengthening of safety regulations.

BIC

Must haves:

  • Simulations of cold forming procedures (closed die forming) on small metallic parts (mm range)
  • Good agreementbetweennumericaland experimental results
  • Ability toidentify key material properties controlling the process
  • Possibility to iterativelymodify the tooling geometry todetermine the best possible configuration

Solution requirements:

  • Technology Readiness Level : Minimum 7 (the technology has been demonstrated in an operational environment, typically through a prototype that is near or at the intended operational system)
  • Any geographical area
  • Any IP status is applicable

Opportunities for collaboration with BIC

BIC is open to establishing R&D contracts and technology licensing agreements. There are opportunities for partnerships, research funding, and research collaboration with various stakeholders, including startups, small and medium companies, large corporates, universities, and research institutes. The funding range to be defined based on the specific proposal received, its pros and cons.
