Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders by Inhibiting Importin Alpha 5Anxiety and stress-related conditions pose a significant health burden on modern healthcare systems. While currently, available anxiolytic drugs can be highly effective for some patients, their long-term use is limited by their potentially severe and debilitating side effects. The group of Prof. Mike Fainzilber discovered a new central regulator of anxiety and identified the nutraceutical ?-sitosterol as a potential treatment for anxiety disorders.IMDEA Water Institute posted this:
Treatment of water from bentonite slurryWhy Does Water From Slurry Require Treatment? The problem arises once the slurry is used and subjected to the separation process by applying a filter press, in order to reuse the water to generate new slurry. The water, due to the loss of quality it suffers during the construction process, interferes with the proper functioning of bentonite, forming an unstable slurry, which tends to flocculate, and thus loses the necessary properties for application. Processing these waters entails a considerable environmental improvement, in addition to cutting operating costs by reducing water consumption and the dumping of effluent which, due to the physicochemical characteristics acquired, is not suitable for discharge under current legislation.CSIC - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas posted this:

Tungsten carbide based composite material, the appropriate method of production and applicationThe preferential production method of the composite material involves the sputtering for the modification of the particle surface by coating them with a nanocrystalline layer of iron-rich metallic binder with variable thickness. The rest of the processing follows the traditional powder metallurgy routes with pressing and sintering in a vacuum furnace. After processing, the composite contains tungsten carbide phase, eta-phase and iron rich binder.- Fabian BelinLuxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST)Fabian Belin

TWISCO – Digital TWIn for Sustainable Supply Chain in ConstructionTwiSCo is a Digital Twin solution demonstrator whose purpose is to promote the sharing of data on construction products in order to finally have complete, accurate and reliable data on a built asset and thus be able to better manage its construction, maintenance and end of life, and to reduce the gap between designed and as-built performance of future constructions. To this aim, TwiSCo offers value-added services which, by enabling players of the construction supply chain to optimize their practices, lead them to formalize and structure their data, and to share them with a win-win perspective. Here are some examples of the gains that the construction supply chain can expect from the tool: Development of new BIM use cases dedicated to the construction phase of buildings, using IFC data coming from BIM models in order to optimize material deliveries on construction sites; Integration of product data from manufacturers (according to new ISO 23386 and 23387) using an ontology to ensure collaboration and efficient data exchanges; de facto, enrichment of as-built model; Implementation of Just-in-Time logistics through a web platform where construction companies and their subcontractors can customize kits and define where they will be delivered and installed, how it should be packaged and when it should be delivered; ·Better control of delivery conditions through the integration of sensors data on site; ·Customization of delivery means and constraints for each project based on user defined business rules ; ·Improved monitoring of the construction site thanks to parcel tracking that enables to locate the place where a material is stored or installed; ·Multi criteria evaluation of current delivery scenarios and alerts on unmanaged constraints; ·Proposition of optimized delivery scenarios calculated by a genetic algorithm.

Ultra-Rapid Structure Reconstruction Using an All-optical Digital TechnologyReconstruction of structures from their scattered intensity distributions is heavily exploited in a range of disciplines, with common methods limited when phase information is lost. Contemporary iterative algorithms depend on a priori knowledge of the object boundaries to solve such inverse scattering problems, but remain highly time-consuming and, at times, inaccurate. The proposed all-optical technology harnesses a digital degenerate cavity laser arrangement that registers the scattered intensity distribution only within the predefined boundaries of the object. The process is ultra-rapid (nanosecond-scale) and bears very high spatial resolution potential.CSIC - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas posted this:

Ultrasonic capillary reactor with temperature control and homogeneous vibrationThe Photochemistry and Semiconductor Electrochemistry (GFES) research group of the University of Alicante has developed an ultrasonically-enhanced capillary reactor which achieves homogeneous, efficient and temperature-controlled multiphase flow. The reactor features a capillary tube in a helicoidal probe that homogenizes the acoustic field generated without the appearance of longitudinal nodes and antinodes. Continuous and/or oscillatory reactions including crystallization phenomena are enabled, allowing the handling of solids and/or the improvement of heterogeneous mixtures in capillary tubes of variable diameter and length with optimum temperature control. Therefore, this reactor provides an advantage in flow chemistry and process intensification which is common in the pharmaceutical industry, fine chemistry, and in sonochemistry. The invention is protected by a patent application. The research group has a prototype on a laboratory scale. Companies interested in the commercial exploitation of this technology are sought through patent licensing agreements or technical cooperation agreements (R&D Projects).

Ultrathin Perovskite Solar CellsBackground Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are a promising low-cost-per-watt solar technology that has soared in efficiencies from 4% to 26% in the last decade. PSCs include a Perovskite layer composed of a ABX3 crystal-structured hybrid organic–inorganic material sandwiched between several other layers. PSCs are thin, light, flexible, cheap, and easy to produce. However, durability, scaling up, and the inclusion of a toxic metal lead as a component of perovskite materials are major bottlenecks precluding commercial-sized production of PSCs.

Universal CAR-Ts for Treating CancerChimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cells (CAR-Ts) are one of the revolutionary technologies of the twenty-first century, invented by Prof. Zelig Eshhar at the Weizmann Institute of Science. FDA approvals for CAR T cells against B-ALL and DLBCL pave the way for CAR-T cell application against other types of cancers. However, the CAR-T technology still suffers from a number of shortfalls. While the efficacy against B cell cancers has been dramatic, the responses of other tumor types, and particularly solid tumors, has been much more modest. In addition, the logistical complexity and the overall labor involved in using the patient’s own cells are significant. Consequently, there are significant advantages to shift away from autologous cells (a patient’s own cells) and to using allogeneic cells (donor cells) as the basis of CAR-Ts, to create a truly “off-the-shelf” treatment.Universidad de Alcalá-OTRI posted this:

US8238513 (B2) - IMAGING SYSTEM AND METHOD UTILIZING PRIMARY RADIATIONAn imaging system and method for producing an image based on primary radiation. A separate image based solely on scattered radiation may also be obtained and may be of practical interests. The separation of primary and scattered radiation is achieved by utilizing a small beam exposure and a cone beam exposure, then the primary and scatter images are reconstructed based on a pencil beam model or from a Monte Carlo method. Other embodiments disclosed include two-layer detector arrays or volumetric detector arrays that measure the relationship between the dose and the position, from which the primary and scattered radiation can be extracted. In addition, by limiting a readout time of a detector, primary radiation component may be read because of a delay in the scattered radiation.
