Transformation of biomass waste to obtain catalysts of interest to the chemical industryThe Materiales Carbonosos y Medio Ambiente (MCMA) research group at the University of Alicante has developed a new procedure to prepare heterogeneous catalysts from biomass waste based on highly dispersed metal nanoparticles. This procedure is characterised by the fact that it is very simple, involves few synthesis steps, the synthesis conditions are mild and it is environmentally friendly. Moreover, it is easy to scale up to an industrial level, allows the revalorisation of any type of biomass-derived waste and has a low manufacturing cost. The synthesised catalysts show excellent catalytic behaviour using low noble transition metal contents and could become very promising candidates to replace current commercial catalysts in the production of molecules of great interest to the chemical sector, such as, for example, in the conversion of levulinic acid to gamma-valerolactone. Transparency and Control over Online AdvertisingThe most popular tools for ad control nowadays are blockers, which remove any form of advertising and thus are against the business model that sustains the Web nowadays. Unlike this radical approach, MyAdChoices is a tool that brings transparency and real control over advertising by allowing users to make informed and equitable decision regarding ad blocking, and by enabling them to exert fine-grained control over advertising.Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology posted this:
TRANSPARENCY OF ACCESS IN PEER-TO-PEER FILESHARING NETWORKSWith the use of peer-to-peer file sharing networks like BitTorrent or Freenet, the distribution of files amongst participants has become fast and easy. In a collaborative environment, this kind of data pool often makes sense, but with the drawback that someone who has provided data to the pool, loses control about who had accessed what file. This transparency of access is often required, e.g. for billing purposes or to fulfil the transparency rule of the new general data protection regulation. There are several options to solve this problem including the use of central systems or logging that involves the source of data. Usually these options introduce single points of failure. The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology offers a blockchain based method that is filed as a patent (patent pending) that avoids these single points of failure but still offers the benefits of redundant distributed file storage and still being able to audit selective the access of files.Larisa Sheloukhova posted this:
Transparent wood-based material with high tensile strengthBio-inspired materials are gaining more and more interest, especially as alternatives to plastic. Biominerals such as seashells and pearls are materials generated by living organisms and composed of both organic and inorganic matter which gives them high toughness. However, such materials are usually not transparent, a highly desired property when it comes to the materials we use for various purposes. In general, it is difficult to achieve both high strength and optical transparency in a single composite material. Usually silica-based transparent glass is used as one of the most dominant engineering materials. However, even advanced oxide glasses are highly brittle and fail to resist the fracture. Wood, on the other hand, is crack-resistant and lightweight, but is not transparent. Attempts to develop transparent wood have been made, but failed to meet the requirements set forth by engineering applications. Therefore, professor Kamitakahara’s team developed a new method of producing a wood-based biomineral-inspired material that has high specific strength and toughness as well as transparency.

TraVisAna: APP for traffic analysis through geopposition routesThe University of Burgos has developed a web application, accessible from a browser, that implements a tool for traffic analysis. It uses GPS data of vehicles that are moving and this data is used to obtain a sample of the traffic during their movements. The use of Big Data technology in the monitoring and analysis of transport activities in the physical world (goods or passengers) will allow contracting companies to draw conclusions about the transport or logistics processes that are currently implemented, and the prediction of the conditions of the trips in the near future, being able to plan or anticipate different situations and allowing, therefore, an optimization of their activities. This type of service can be very beneficial to courier companies, transport logistics, passenger transport (taxis or buses), public administrations or municipalities, etc.Yeda posted this:
Treating Chronic Pain by Inhibiting Importin Alpha 3Pain, particularly in cases of chronic nerve injury and disease, is a critical element of numerous medical conditions and procedures, which is generally managed with opioid analgesics. While generally highly effective, they are associated with adverse effects, and risk of tolerance, dependence, and abuse. The group of Prof. Mike Fainzilber characterized the role of Importina3 and its downstream AP1 mediators in chronic pain. Knockout or knockdown of Importina3 and other components along the pathway was associated with decreased sensitivity to pain cues. Furthermore, inhibition of the Importina3 pathway with specific inhibitors or repurposed drugs provided relief from acute and chronic pain. These findings present novel non-opioid therapeutic targets with potential modalities for intervention.Universitat de Lleida posted this:

Treatment for Acute liver failure (ALF)Acute liver failure (ALF) is a rapid deterioration of liver function, resulting in a high mortality rate in the absence of liver transplantation. ALF treatment remains highly limited and mostly supportive due to a lack of a comprehensive understanding of the molecular base of ALF. The group of Profs. Eran Elinav and Ido Amit used high-resolution single-cell analysis methods to unravel the entire molecular mechanism that drives ALF progression. They show that ALF results from activation of the MYC signaling pathway in specific hepatic cells in response to gut microbiome signals. Based on their findings, inhibition of MYC, TLR, or MAPK pathways or microbiome modulation by antibiotics could attenuate ALF.Yeda posted this:
Treatment for Drug-Resistant Non-Small Cell Lung CancerNon-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) is a very common type of cancer, and despite currently available therapies, is one of the deadliest due to the emergence of drug resistance, which results in tumor recurrence. Thus, there is a clear need for novel therapeutic strategies to overcome resistance, especially in the EGFR+ cohort of patients. The group of Prof. Yosef Yarden has developed a new therapeutic antibody that blocks a common drug resistance mechanism. This antibody completely inhibited tumor progression and was proven especially efficient when administered in combination with known drugs by inhibiting drug resistance thus preventing relapses of NSCLC.Yeda posted this:
Treatment for Ewing Sarcoma Using ETS ProteinsEwing sarcoma (ES) is a common bone malignancy in children and young adolescents which is usually treated by systemic chemotherapy. In about 25% of the cases, cancer has already spread to other parts of the body at the time of diagnosis. Here, we discover a novel family of ETS proteins that binds the glucocorticoid receptors and might retard cancer progression. This methodology can be used as an effective solution for Ewing Sarcoma's prognosis and treatment.Yeda posted this:
Treatment for Inflammatory Diseases and CancerThe development of kinase inhibitors to treat inflammatory diseases was proved beneficial, however, designing specific inhibitors with minimal side effects and prolonged efficacy is challenging as drug resistance often develops. The current technology includes inhibitors that specifically target the nuclear translocation of p38 kinase, thus inhibiting only its pro? inflammatory activities without developing drug resistance. Two types of inhibitors were developed – a uniquely designed peptide and small molecules. The inhibitors were tested in mice models and proved to effectively treat inflammatory bowel disease and prevent chronic inflammation-driven tumor development.Yeda posted this:
Treatment of Autoimmune Diseases by Modulating BregsChronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), a malignant disease characterized by the accumulation of B lymphocytes in the blood, lymphoid organs, and bone marrow, is the second most common type of leukemia in adults, accounting for about 7,000 new cases of leukemia each year. Presently, there is no cure for CLL, and the overall goal of leukemia treatment is to bring about a remission. Therefore, identifying new proteins that may serve as a target for inducing cell death in the malignant cells is highly desirable. The present technology identifies a new regulator protein that is essential for the survival of CLL cells.Fabiola Moreno posted this:

Treatment of water from bentonite slurryWhy Does Water From Slurry Require Treatment? The problem arises once the slurry is used and subjected to the separation process by applying a filter press, in order to reuse the water to generate new slurry. The water, due to the loss of quality it suffers during the construction process, interferes with the proper functioning of bentonite, forming an unstable slurry, which tends to flocculate, and thus loses the necessary properties for application. Processing these waters entails a considerable environmental improvement, in addition to cutting operating costs by reducing water consumption and the dumping of effluent which, due to the physicochemical characteristics acquired, is not suitable for discharge under current legislation.CSIC - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas posted this:
