Scalable aperture-combined optical telescope CSIC and the Astrohita Foundation have developed a telescope, which comprises several optical assemblies that focus the light from a target on individual optical fibers, which are combined together in a final single optical fiber. The rest of the light is simultaneously collected in image devices, which record the field of view of each optical assembly. The gathered images are summed together to achieve a high-quality final image. These telescopes are not of interest only in the field of astronomy but also in the tracking of satellites and space junk. Industrial partners from the Astronomy, Astrophysics and telecommunications sector are being sought to collaborate through a patent licence agreement.

Search Engine for New Anti-Cancer TargetsMany newly developed anti-cancer treatments rely on identifying cancer unique signatures that can be used to harness the immune system against the tumor. The internal state of all cells is constantly represented on their surfaces by unique molecules called Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) bound peptides. Consequently, many efforts focus on identifying cancer?unique HLA-bound peptides. However, currently available methods only allow considering the peptides’ primary sequence, overlooking other potential chemical modifications known as posttranslational modifications (PTMs). PTMs greatly affect the binding of these peptides to HLA molecules and thus the subsequent response by interacting immune cells. There is a need for a method to identify cancer-unique HLAbound peptides that takes into account the peptides’ PTMs. The group of Prof. Yifat Merbl successfully developed a computational platform; where an improved pipeline allows for simultaneous in?parallel detection of multiple PTMs, expanding the landscape of HLA bound-peptides by up to 20% by identifying chemically modified peptides.

Selective ion capture, separation and concentrationElectrochemical cells with ion-selective electrodes can be used for pumping of ions from impure liquors to refined solutions. This involves ion capture, separation and concentration processes. The electrodes proposed for this technology derive from the active materials in metal-ion intercalation batteries, such as Li-ion, Na-ion and K-ion batteries. These active materials are conformed in a semi-solid flow design that allows the electrodes to be easily replaced when they reach the end of their lifetime. In addition, the thickness of the electrodes is adapted according to the required area capacity and allows different types of electrode materials to be injected depending on the demand of the separation process, showing great versatility. This versatility is enhanced by adjusting the cell configuration to symmetric and asymmetric architectures by using different ionic exchange membranes and depending on the type of inlet and outlet solutions processed.
