REAL-TIME ANOMALY DETECTION OF LARGE, DENSE CROWD BEHAVIOR, FROM VIDEO AND MULTI-SENSOR INFORMATIONCurrent methods for detection of crowd behavior are based on tracking individuals or virtual particles. Such assessments are highly prohibitive, preventing the real time and efficient analysis. Other approaches use comparisons of individual behaviors with normal patterns. However, these approaches are tedious and unreliable. This novel procedure allows for the use of a sensing system (comprising video and multi-sensor information) for real-time detection of the behavior of a large, dense crowd. Reconfigurable beam reflectarray antenna for frequencies in the range of terahertz and millimeter waveThe reflectarray antenna consists of a flat array of phase-shifter cells (reflectarray) illuminated by a feeder, which produces an electronically reconfigurable collimated or shaped beam, where the cells (3b) consist of several stacked layers of conductive elements (4c, 4e, 4d, 4f) on a dielectric substrate (7c, 7d) alternated with layers of liquid crystal (5c, 5d) and a conductive plane (9). Applying bias voltages in the conducting elements, the dielectric constant of the liquid crystal varies producing a phase shift of the reflected field in each cell, allowing for a electronic beam scanning or reconfiguration. Including multiple layers of conductive elements and liquid crystal, improves the bandwidth and the performance of the beam scanning or reconfiguration. The antenna can be applied to observation satellites, communications and security systems.Universidad de Granada posted this:

Recycling of precious metals via an efficient process with no toxic byproductPlatinum group metals (PGM) are well-known precious metals that play an important role in many industrial applications as catalysts. Current methods for their recycling are not efficient, require extreme conditions, and involve toxic reagents or byproducts. Prof. Igor Lubomirsky and his team developed a method for efficient and environmentally benign recovery of precious materials that are currently discarded in large quantities from spent catalysts (automotive and industrial) from industrial processes (particularly in the electronic industry). The process is based on volatilization for selective extraction of precious and rare metals using benign metal salts rather than dangerous chlorine gas as a chlorinating agent. The new process requires relatively low temperatures and is free from hazardous waste, among its additional advantages over conventional methods. We believe that this efficient technology is key to increased reclaimed precious metals output, potentially reducing the demand for primary rare metals.Christophe Auriant posted this:

Regulatory compounds of synaptic transmission for the treatment of neurological diseasesThe CSIC and IRYCIS (Ramón y Cajal Institute for Health Research) have developed a group of compounds. These compounds have the ability to regulate the number of synapses that are formed between neurons, as well as the probability that neurotransmitters are released from these, because they have the capability of modulate the interactions that take place between the regulatory proteins NCS-1 and Ric8a that regulate these two independent processes. Due to these neuromodulatory properties, these compounds are useful for the treatment of neurological diseases as Alzheimer's disease, Huntington or Parkinson's diseases among others. Removable system for continuous connection of square tube profilesThe removable system allows mounting on each profile separately, joining then in continuity with plates at the head of each of the flanges. The use of anti-buckling clamps prevents local buckling of the walls of the profiles, associated with tightening of flanges. Flanges have nerves to reduce stresses. The same flanges are valid for connecting different sized sections of square tube profiles.UACOOPERA University of Aveiro posted this:

Repair of Nerve Injuries by Schwann Cells Produced from Pluripotent Stem Cell LinesThere are many types of nerve injuries awaiting new advanced therapies. One example is entrapment neuropathy, a group of injuries caused mainly by compression of peripheral nerves, resulting in numbness, pain, sensory disturbance, and muscle weakness, which significantly impair patients’ daily lives. Carpal tunnel syndrome, the most common entrapment neuropathy, is reported with 1 - 5% incidence worldwide, but there is no treatment other than surgery, which is not effective in many cases. In addition, there are many traumas resulting in peripheral nerve rupture or spinal cord injury leading to irreversible limb loss or systemic dysfunction, respectively. There is no treatment for these nerve injuries except for surgery, which is often ineffective due to limited nerve regeneration. Cell therapies are under development, particularly for spinal cord injuries, with very limited success so far and/or in early phases. Schwann cells are a type of nerve system cells that play important roles in repair, regeneration, and growth of peripheral nerves. Although therapy using autologous Schwann cells for spinal cord injury has been reported, harvesting from one’s neural tissues poses challenges due to cell number limitation and damage to intact nerves. Thus, mass production of allogeneic Schwann cells is a better alternative, but it has been difficult to develop. SCAD is a spin-off from Kyoto University, which has successfully achieved the production of Schwann cells using pluripotent stem (PS) cells, including ES and iPS cell lines, and is now developing cell therapy for neuropathies and nerve injuries.

Repurposed Drug for Amplifying the Anti-Depressant Effects of KetaminePsychiatric disorders, with emphasis on major depressive disorder (MDD), are leading causes of disability and premature death across the globe, with patients showing a heightened risk of self-harm and suicidal ideation. Current pharmaceutical treatment options suffer from significantly prolonged time to response and suboptimal responses in a significant proportion of the patient population. Prof. Alon Chen and his team identified a novel target of ketamine, a drug commonly prescribed to manage mood disorders. The team found that combination therapy comprised of ketamine and an agonist drug enhancing the activity of the novel target boosted antidepressive effects of ketamine in mice and propose its potential in improving current treatment protocols for psychiatric disorders, including depressive disorders MDD.Universidad de Alicante posted this:

Reusable device that allows the circulation of a constant volume of electrolyte in tests on rotating bending fatigue test machines.Rotating bending fatigue machine are essential for testing material properties. It is usual to face samples of the different materials to conditions that differ from the usual ones, such as corrosive environments, to evaluate their behavior. Researchers from the University of Burgos have developed a device that allows this type of analysis to be carried out, allowing, unlike many of the current methods, that the material to be analyzed is in direct contact with the electrolyte responsible for generating conditions other than the usual ones. Additionally, thank to the design of the device, it can be used in more than one experiment.Yeda posted this:
Reusable Gold Nanostars Substrates for Signal Amplification for DiagnosticsNumerous spectroscopic techniques utilize signal enhancement from surfaces of nanoparticles linked to analyte molecules. However, existing surface-enhanced spectroscopies (SES) are based on solution-based nanoparticles dispersion and are unsuitable for solid substrates. Dr. Shimanovich and her team (led by Dr. Solomonov) have developed a set of spiked gold nanostructures (also called “nanostars”, “nanoflowers”, “nanourchins”) embedded directly on solid-state substrates. These functionalized nanostar-substrates enable signal amplification in solid substrates and serve as highly sensitive transducers in various spectroscopies, including surface-enhanced Raman (SERS), surface-enhanced circular dichroism (SECD), localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), and surfaceenhanced fluorescence spectroscopy (SEFS) of molecules of biological, organic or inorganic origin.
