Precursor compounds for providing retinoids of the vitamin A5 pathway and uses thereofThe invention relates to the field of retinoid X receptor (RXR) signalling and a novel vitamin A pathway called Vitamin A5 pathway. Compounds which are useful to provide (R) 9-cis-13,14-dihydro-retinoic acid an endogenous RXR ligand are claimed as well as their uses and method for preparation thereof. The inventors identified a series of compounds including members of an independent new vitamin A pathway (Vitamin A5), most notably 9-cis-13,14-dihydroretinol (9cDHROL), and which are precursors of the actual endogenous RXR ligand. They have also surprisingly found that these precursors produce an unexpectedly high increase of 9cDHRA in the brain and are useful vectors to target brain signaling of RXRs. The compounds of the invention are useful for pharmaceutical and nutritional uses.- Institut Català d'Investigació Química (ICIQ)Institut Català d'Investigació Química (ICIQ)Institut Català d'Investigació Química (ICIQ)

Precursors of linear polyacenes: entry door to new semi-conductor materialsA new strategy for the preparation of precursors of linear acenes has been developed. The developed acene precursors are hydrogenated acenes and are stable upon storage. They can be prepared in several synthetic steps using two catalytic key preparation steps. The precursors can be deposited onto surfaces and submitted to annealing to generate the linear acene. This strategy afforded the first-ever preparation of undecacene. - Fundación para la Investigación Biosanitaria de Andalucía Oriental (FIBAO)Fundación para la Investigación Biosanitaria de Andalucía Oriental (FIBAO)Fundación para la Investigación Biosanitaria de Andalucía Oriental (FIBAO)

Predicting Blood MetabolitesThe serum metabolome contains a plethora of biomarkers and causative agents of various diseases. They are known to be modulated by various genetic and environmental factors such as the gut microbiome, nutrition, and lifestyle. However, most of the serum metabolites and their determinants are still unknown. The group of Prof. Eran Segal characterized the serum metabolome of a well-phenotyped human cohort using mass spectrometry. Using this database, the team developed machine learning algorithms to predict metabolite levels in held-out individuals based on their host genetics, gut microbiome, clinical parameters, diet, lifestyle, and anthropometric measurements. The team developed a method to predict the serum metabolome non-invasively, based on the subject’s microbiome profile (using stool samples) or dietary habits. The method could be applied to predict diseases associated with specific blood metabolites (i.e., metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease). It can also provide recommendations for dietary changes, probiotics, or antibiotics consumption to alter the blood metabolome and improve a subject’s health.Yeda posted this:
Predicting Childhood ObesityChildhood obesity is a global health crisis, which holds extended complex health and psychological problems. Although an early diagnosis of children at risk for obesity could allow intervention and prevention, healthcare professionals have little guidance to identify individuals at risk. The current technology provides a method to identify individuals at high risk of developing childhood obesity before two years old, allowing early intervention and possible prevention of future obesity.Yeda posted this:
Predicting Gestational Diabetes Mellitusdiabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common complications of pregnancy, increasing the risk for short and long-term adverse events for both mother and offspring. Early intervention can reduce future complications, however, GDM is currently diagnosed only at late pregnancy stages. The group of Prof. Eran Segal developed a computational method that identifies women who are at high risk to develop GDM during early pregnancy stages based on electronic health records and a questionnaire. This can be applied as an early selective screening process, exempting women at low risk from unnecessary glucose tolerance tests, thus reducing costs and inconvenience.LUCIA CORAL posted this:

Preparation able to produce biopesticide and/or repellent for controlling plant pathogensThe present LIST technology makes use of several elements, in order to provide an in situ constant flux of biopesticides and/or repellent product as part of a XXXX (name device or support?), namely: 1) a precursor (chosen among the inactive and non-toxic forms of the potential organic derivatives) mixed with mineral (e.g. phosphate buffer) and co-factors (e.g. ascorbic acid); 2) active enzymes (selected from the group of glycosidase, lyase and/or lachrymatory-factor synthase) in dry or liquid form; 3) a silica mesoporous material for enzymes’ immobilization; 4) hydrophilic gels for the microencapsulation of the silica mesoporous material. The technology also envisages the use of an apparatus comprising plant fibres (such as hemp, flax fibres), coated with a hydrophobic layer hindering the release of by-products in the environment and preventing the fibres from drying and organized in a network providing a protective cover to plants. The apparatus can comprise a cartridge loaded with precursors, minerals and co-factors and connected on one hand to a water entry port and to the other to the fibre network.

Pressure gauge plunger for 3D printing platforms.Pressure measuring device for 3D printing platforms. This device is applicable to various fields using the extrusion of semi-solid masses (tissue bioprinting, food industry, pharmaceutical, ceramics). Its usefulness lies in the fact that it allows continuous control of the pressure applied throughout the printing process, thanks to the instrumentation of the plunger. In this way, quality can be improved and errors can be detected in situ and corrective actions can be applied during the process. By using a strain gauge, the pressure value exerted by the printing platform component on the plunger and, therefore, on the mass to be extruded is obtained. This continuous control makes it possible to characterize the semi-solid mass to be printed and to establish the most suitable printing parameters on the spot, thus making it possible to fully automate the process.Arkadiusz Rudawski, PhD posted this:

Pressurized foam fire protection system for large diameter atmospheric storageOne of our partners developed a technology that provides uncompromised safety against full surface fires for large diameter atmospheric storage tanks - even if personnel, water supply, and electrical resources are vague and terrain, room, and climate are unfavorable - without polluting the environment or endangering lives The current ruling procedure is that only rim seal fires have to be taken out. In the case of a large full surface tank fire, the ruling tactic in most cases is to use whatever resources there are to contain the crisis and let the tank burn out. However in this way, the business disruption and environmental exposure is unacceptably huge. If other tanks are nearby, there is little chance of isolating a single tank if supplies are limited, and the whole terminal could be endangered.Yeda posted this:
Preventing Biofilm Formation by Enzyme InhibitorsBiofilm is a complex colony of bacteria, which are attached together by extracellular polymeric substance. This setting provides the bacteria protection against environmental factors, improves their surface attachment, and plays a major role in resistance to treatment. Therefore, biofilms are difficult to eradicate, much more than single bacterial colonies. Biofilms can form on a variety of surfaces, both living and non-living, and can therefore be found in industrial, hospital, and natural settings. One such example of biofilm formation is Cystic fibrosis patients, who often develop chronic life-threatening infections in their respiratory systems and treatment is made problematic due to said biofilms. The research team of Dr. Kolodkin-Gal managed to disrupt the structure of biofilms and prevent their formation. This was performed by inhibiting enzymes that contribute to the properties of the extracellular matrix. When the extracellular matrix is compromised due to this treatment, the formation of the biofilm is disturbed, and it becomes more susceptible to treatment. This invention can therefore be a powerful tool to control, prevent, and destroy biofilms in a variety of settings.Yeda posted this:
Preventing Infections Using Lipid Based MoleculesSphingosine (SPH), a natural bactericidal agent which acts as a part of the human innate immune system in the skin, was found to be an effective treatment and prophylaxis for bacterial lung infections in cystic fibrosis (CF) mice. CF is the most common autosomal recessive disorder in western countries, affecting approximately 30,000 people in the US alone. A major risk in CF arises from chronic bacterial lung infections, affecting 80% of CF patients by the age of 25. The infections are currently treated with antibiotics, which rapidly become inefficient as resistant bacteria strains arise. The new technology is based on the discovery that both CF human patients and CF mice display reduced rates of SPH in the airways. Moreover, normalizing SPH levels by inhalation prevents or cures the infections in CF mice, thus rendering SPH a potent therapeutic agent for CF patients, an alternative to antibiotics.CSIC - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas posted this:

PRISM: Plastic packaging Recycling using Intelligent Separation technologies for MaterialsPRISM is a process for rapidly automatically sorting packaging based on intelligent labels with invisible markers. Codes are written using luminescent materials, typically inorganic phosphors. At the recycling facility the articles are subject to excitation radiation of a specific wavelength and a few seconds/milliseconds later are subject to infra‑red detection as currently. This 2‑step process can identify articles according to the codes and sort them as specified. The benefits include increased recycling rates, the ability to sort articles by their end use (food, non-food) and composition increasing the value of such plastic. Incorporation into existing recycling facilities is easy and cost‑effective with a limited need for capital investment.Ilythia Morley posted this:
