Organic molecule capable of detecting explosivesResearchers from the University of Burgos have designed a method to synthesize a compound that is extremely useful in the detection of explosives, such as triacetone triperoxide. This explosive is very simple to prepare and extremely difficult to detect. The project has been subsidized by NATO and, given the potential of the molecule, a patent has been applied for to protect and commercialize it.UNIVERSIDAD DE BURGOS posted this:
Orientation of fibers within composites: improvement of material properties and manufacturing processIt is well known that there are correlations between fiber orientation and mechanical and/or physical properties of the composite. Knowing the real orientation of the fibers within a composite material can help to optimize the design and manufacturing process. A composite material contains materials of different densities (fibrous material and matrix), and these have different X-rays absorption capacity, generating different grey levels in scanned images. This allows later identification and separation by the computed tomography scan (CT-scan), a non-destructive technique that provides scanned images with the orientations of fibrous or filamentary components contained inside a composite material, and therefore its mechanical and/or physical properties. However the interpretation of these images depends on the criterium of the technicians, being a subjective opinion. This subjective interpretation can be solved by our computer implemented method that allows a numeric objective valoration of the orientations of fibres or filaments inside the composite. The final result is a more efficient use of the fiber, and therefore an optimal design, from both structural and economical points of views.CSIC - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas posted this:

Paper-based temperature sensor with high sensitivityThe CSIC has developed a thermo-resistive sensor comprising a semiconductor material onto a paper substrate. The use of this type of materials together with deposition technique of semiconductor element allow to design a thermo-resistive sensor with high sensitivity to abrupt temperature changes being up to an order of magnitude more sensitive than analogous sensors based on graphite. The use of paper as substrate makes this sensor cheap, easy to produce and biodegradable. The incorporation of this device in fabrics allows to monitor body temperature. Likewise, when integrated in packaging, it allows to record thermal history of goods. Industrial partners from the electronic components and sensors sectors or companies from textile and paper industry are being sought to collaborate through a patent license agreement.CSIC - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas posted this:
Particle identification using a high precision system based on multi-frequency measurements of resonant platesCSIC has developed a new system that allows to identify and classify nanometric and micrometric particles. This system is based on the changes produced at different resonance frequencies of thin plate type structures when these particles are adsorbed onto their surface. This technology represents an important achievement in the field of nanomechanical spectrometry and is suitable for the identification and classification of viruses, bacteria or proteins. Passive sampler for monitoring atmospheric pollutants (VERAM)The most remarkable advantages provided by this technology are: o Versatility, it is possible to sample a big number of pollutants using a single device containing a combination of solid phases. o Greater adsorption capacity and high analytic sensitivity with smaller sampling time than market available devices. o Rapidity and low cost of pollutant analysis. Thermal desorption and head space injection minimize sample handling, do not require the use of solvents and reduce the time of analysis. o Cheap passive samplers with a fast and simple fabrication procedure. o VERAM permits a multidirectional sampling differing from radial or one-way sampling devices with encapsulated solid phases.Universitat de València posted this:
Passive sensor for in situ detection of amines in atmospheres Simplicity and ease of use: it is a passive colorimetric sensor that does not require any kind of pretreatment or power supply or external instrument. Low cost: simple fabrication process without high costs Low detection limits: suitable for use in real atmospheres, of the order of 3 mg/m3. Quantitative detection: direct quantitative detection can be carried out by diffuse reflectance of the sensors. Stability: against a wide range of temperatures and to humidity and solar radiation. Pathogen capture and inactivation deviceThe invention discloses a system that permits the uptake and inactivation of pathogenic biological agents in fluids (gases or liquids) by passing the same through one or more modulable and configurable treatment zones. The combination of the different types of zones, steps and stages, allow the device to be adapted for functions such as the capture of substances or organisms, inactivation of pathogens, capture and inactivation of chemicals, additivation, humidification, as well as other processes that require the passage of a fluid through different treatment elements. The system can be used as a test device to study the capacity of different physical and chemical treatments, as well as to analyze the times and contact surfaces required to capture and inactivate pathogenic biological agents in a continuous flow of gases or liquids; serving as a tool for its own definition and final consolidation according to each case. The system, in one of its simplest configurations, is capable of inactivating microorganisms in an air flow with an efficiency of 99.99%, including SARS-Cov-2. In the event of the emergence of new pathogens in the future, the device facilitates its own redefinition for the deactivation of such agents.

Patterned surfaces for physical entrapment of drug particlesEasy-to-apply device composed of a transdermal patch with microsize patterns such as micropillars, able to efficiently entrap the maximum amount of drug particles at the microscale and release them in a controlled and sustained manner. The maximum amount of entrapped drug microparticles is enabled by the similarity between the micropillars spacing in the patch and the microparticles diameter, enhancing the dose of the therapeutic compound administrated, decreasing the need of frequently replacing the patch.

PC-ProTec A novel, highly effective zinc free anticorrosive additive easily dispersible in priming paintsPC-ProTec is a new technology uniquely positioned as a safer alternative to replace toxic anticorrosive additives, mainly zinc and its compounds, typically used in paint formulations to protect metal structures. The novel zinc-free anticorrosive pigment, which is applied in very low concentrations (0.3-1.5 wt %), is based on poly(alkyl thiophene acetate)s. This technology meets the new environmental regulations that restrict the use of zinc. Partners to further develop the technology and/or to establish commercial agreements along with technical cooperation are sought.Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - UPC posted this:

Peptides for Treating Alzheimer's DiseaseAlzheimer's Disease (AD) is an age-associated neurodegenerative disorder characterized clinically by a decline in cognitive function. It is the most common type of dementia, with 5.8 million Americans living with AS in 2020. There are currently no curative or preventive treatments for the disease, which drastically affects patients' quality of life and impses a tremendous burden on their family and caregivers. Therefore, there is a substantial clinical and environmental need for curative therapies for AD. The group of Prof. Ruth Arnon developed a treatment for AD that prevents the pathological manifestation of the disease and improved cognitive function in an AD mice model.
