Green Tech Innovation CentreLIST is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) based in Luxembourg. It supports the development of competitive and market-oriented products by offering technology-intensive services and prototypes for public and private institutions. LIST works across the entire innovation chain: fundamental and applied research, product and process development, incubation and transfer of technologies. Along this line, the Sustainable Biotech Innovation Centre (SBIC) - a facility for the development of sustainable bio-based products, bioprocesses of industrial interest, and new technologies for the detection and treatment of environmental pollution - was recently created. Chemical synthesis of these compounds is not feasible due to their complexity, and harvesting said compounds from plants can be extremely challenging and inefficient. The lab of Prof. Asaph Aharoni has developed a method for simple extraction of plant metabolites, which does not damage the plant or interferes with the formation of these compounds. Harnessing inhibitory RNA based- nanoparticles for therapeutic intervention in blood cancersModulating T cells functions by down regulating specific genes using RNA interference (RNAi) holds tremendous potential in advancing targeted therapies in many immune related disorders including cancer, inflammation, autoimmunity and viral infections. Hematopoietic cells, in general, and primary T lymphocytes, in particular, are notoriously hard to transfect with small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). Herein, we describe a novel strategy to specifically deliver siRNAs to murine CD4+ T cells using targeted lipid nanoparticles (tLNPs). To increase the efficacy of siRNA delivery, these tLNPs have been formulated with several lipids designed to improve the stability and efficacy of siRNA delivery. The tLNPs were surface functionalized with anti-CD4 monoclonal antibody (mAb) to permit delivery of the siRNAs specifically to CD4+ T lymphocytes. Ex vivo, tLNPs demonstrated specificity by targeting only primary CD4+ T lymphocytes and no other cell types. Systemic intravenous administration of these particles led to efficient binding and uptake into CD4+ T lymphocytes in several anatomical sites including the spleen, inguinal lymph nodes, blood and the bone marrow. Silencing by tLNPs occur in a subset of circulating and resting CD4+ T lymphocytes. Interestingly, we show that tLNPs internalization and not endosome escape is a fundamental event that takes place as early as one hour after systemic administration that determine tLNPs efficacy. Taken together, these results suggest that tLNPs may open new avenues for the manipulation of T cell functionality and may help to establish RNAi as a therapeutic modality in leukocyte-associated diseases. Head & Neck Brace - Special aid for patients suffering from dropped head syndromeHead and Neck Brace is a solution to the difficulties involved with fallen head syndrome: it solves head fixation in the required position for safe food intake (mild flexion, head support) and at the same time it uprights body position (spine support). Some neurological disorders are manifested by weakness of the extensor muscles of the neck, which causes inadequate kyphosis in the area of the cervical and thoracic spine (dropped head syndrome DHS). This creates problems with food intake and the risk of aspiration and swallowing disorders and an overall reduction in quality of life. One of the common causes of these disorders are neurodegenerative disorders – amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Patients experience gradual progressive muscle weakness, including respiratory muscles. All this happens while maintaining mental abilities. Head and neck brace – a device made of a combination of plastic and aluminum and textile cover, which on the principle of a splint attached and fixed to the head and torso maintains an upright position of the head and neck and stability of the spine. The system of attaching the brace to the body and head is secured with adjustable straps and velcro fastener. The upright position of the head reduces the risk of inhaling food and at the same time allows the user to perform normal daily activities (reading, writing, working on a PC, watching TV). Our device is easy to handle, easy to maintenance and it offers the possibility of individual production, directly according to the user’s instructions. Prototype testing took place both in hospital environment and at home. The chin support collars used in practice stabilize the position of the head, but at the same time, they make it difficult to open the mouth and chew. The use of various positioning aids is also limited. Any other device that would ensure an upright position while maintain the ability to swallow and quality of life is not currently available on the market in the Czech Republic. Our device is intended for acute and follow-up care facilities, rehabilitation institutions, social care institutions and home environment. Optic systems present very good spatial resolution, but they exhibit a limited robustness for operation under harsh/hostile conditions, or in environments subjected to pollution or dirtiness, such as those encountered in many industrial scenarios. Magnetic encoders and Hall-effect sensors are also of interest for motion control, but such sensors are based on inductive elements or magnets, thereby representing a higher cost solution, as compared to electromagnetic encoders. Additionally, electromagnetic encoders can be used as Chipless RadioFrequency IDentification (RFID) tags. Namely, a certain identification code can be provided to the chain of inclusions.
