Chitosan-based wound dressing for diabetic foot ulcer treatment and burn woundsChitosan-based wound dressing that stimulates the closure, neovascularization and permanent regeneration of dermis in diabetic feet’s ulcers. It reduces the risk of amputation in patients. This innovation can also be used to prevent or treat wound and burn infections, not only due to its intrinsic antimicrobial properties, but also due to its ability to deliver extrinsic antimicrobial agents to wounds and burns. Additionally, it can be used as a slow-release drug-delivery vehicle for growth factors to stimulate and improve wound healing. This technology offers a complete regeneration of the ulcer using a single copy of the material without the need for invasive treatment, ensuring no backsliding in the development of ulcers. The purification process triggered by the chitosan and the ensuing chemical modifications in the membranes reduce possible allergic reactions and maximize the benefits, such as its antibacterial effects.University of Waterloo posted this:
Circuit, system, and method for thin-film transistor logic gatesBackground Thin-film transistors (TFT) are widely used in large-area electronics, such as flat-panel displays and medical imagers. Owing to being a low-cost, simpler technology, only simple circuits can be fabricated in a typical TFT process. Some attempts by others have been made to realize digital logic circuits in a TFT process for smart flat panel applications. However these have always come at a great cost and substantial, wasted power consumption that reduces energy efficiency for portable electronics. Our approach results in a low-cost, energy efficient realization of digital logic circuits in a TFT process. It utilizes, a minimal number with none of the associated wasted power consumption.Luxembourg Institute of Health posted this:
Circular RNA Biomarkers For Heart Failure DiagnosticsCircular RNAs are a class of noncoding RNAs covalently closed by a back spicing event, making them protected from degradation by exonuclease. They are tissue- and disease-specific and are detectable in the blood. These properties confer circRNAs with valuable potential as disease biomarkers for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The Cardiovascular Research team of the Luxembourg Institute of Health leaded by Dr Yvan Devaux has discovered and patented hundreds of circRNAs detectable in the blood and associated with cardiovascular conditions such as heart failure. Heart failure affects more than half of the population over 65 and represents an enormous financial burden to the society. Circular RNAs can be measured in a highly specific manner using sequencing, methods based on probe hybridization, or quantitative PCR with divergent primers. They have potential to be used in diagnostics tests, companion diagnostics or, being involved in disease development and progression, as therapeutic targets.Jeremie LangletLuxembourg Institute of Health

Claw hand rehabilitation device and procedure for useIt is a device to improve the rehabilitation process of people suffering from "claw hand". At present, the devices intended for the rehabilitation of "claw hand" are not capable of autonomously rehabilitating, after programming, the fingers of the damaged hand, nor is there currently any motorized device to perform such a function. In addition, rehabilitation processes with current systems do not come close to what an adequate passive rehabilitation should be, which consists, fundamentally, of performing successive repetitions, maintaining the stretch for a short period of time. For this reason, rehabilitation treatment is currently performed by the therapist with his or her own hands during pre-set time sessions, which is why the currently existing devices can only be considered as a complement to the treatment performed by the physiotherapist.Fabian BelinLuxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST)

CLIMOBIL car comparator: Are electric cars indeed environmentally friendly? The Climobil web application lets users understand why, how, and in which cases electromobility is performing according to its green image, by cutting per-km emissions from its fossil fuel-based counterpart. Based on a simplified life cycle assessment model, the tool is scientifically sound while its objective is primarily pedagogic. Additionally, Climobil provides the exact context and conditions under which electric vehicles may “counter perform”: what happens when the battery size changes? Or the background electricity mix? The battery lifetime? What about winter conditions affecting battery performances? The web application provides information to compare internal combustion engine vehicles and electric vehicles from 84 different brands and more than 8500 different models from 2005 to 2019. There are more than a dozen different parameters that can be adjusted to obtain the most precise and fair comparison: annual mileage, battery capacity, electric car range, greenhouse gas emissions of battery recycling, NEDC-to-real world ratio[ Pre-2019 models have consumption and emissions advertised following the NEDC protocol, whose lab conditions tend to underestimate real-world values. Since 2020, a more realistic scheme, WLTP, applies.], etc. The web application is available in French and in English and allows the users to download the different parameters and results as csv files, to reproduce the results obtained. The application is built around 3 main modules plus the parametrization module. The first module allows to select two vehicles (one electric, one internal combustion) to compare, the second module provides a comparison in terms of life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions, in g of CO2 equivalent per kilometre (including complete production and maintenance), and the third module provides break even information in terms of the total emission in tons of CO2 equivalent per vehicle and average emissions in grams of CO2 equivalent per kilometre.

CmoreThe CSIR has developed a web services platform for collaboration and information sharing within and across organisational boundaries during operations. The Cmore platform incorporates information from various sources into a consolidated view that provides users with in-time shared situation awareness. It is a secure, private cloud-based platform with both mobile and web-based applications which are used to view and contribute information to the platform. Safeguarding national key points such as ports and national parks from illegal entry is a challenge in Southern Africa. Porous borders have given rise to increased incidents of poaching and illegal crossings between countries. “Cmore is the perfect solution in the environmental asset management environment and has helped anti-poaching groups to collaborate and consolidate their efforts. In-time information shared between counter-poaching teams can assist groups to direct scarce resources to where they are most effective. By sharing information from different sources in a controlled manner, Cmore achieves accurate reporting with less effort, and pro-active interventions as opposed to reactive operations,” says CSIR research group leader, Herman le Roux. Cmore’s extensible data model and ease of use makes it suited for various other domains in which shared situational awareness is required such as enforcement, compliance, safety, security and operations. Cmore is also flexible as a data collection platform as proven with recent support to the Department of Health to assist community health workers who used the Cmore mobile app to conduct CV-19 household screening. More than 3 million records were collected. Cmore’s scalability and versality enables it to be customized and deployed across an intensity spectrum ranging from low intensity use cases involving small medium sized enterprises all the way up to massive top tier global public and private enterprises global users with demanding requirements. The CSIR is therefore keen to partner with the public and private sector players, both locally and globally to realise opportunities and solve some of the most challenging situational awareness problems across domains.CSIR posted this:

Coated meshes/filters for oil-water separationThe technology offer relates to hydrophilically coated meshes and their use for separating mixtures of water and a hydrophobic liquid such as oil. The meshes allow water to pass through while the hydrophobic liquid is held back, effectively separating the two phases. These meshes are lightweight, mobile, flexible, resistant to fouling and offer versatile application possibilities (horizontally, vertically, in cascades, different geometries etc.). Mesh and separated liquids can be recycled (benefit to e.g. oil sorption materials). No chemicals such as de-oilers are needed or used. Potential application fields: Industrial waste/process water, crude oil production, oil-spill accidents.

CogniSense reduces machine downtime through remote system-level monitoringThe effective remote monitoring of rotating equipment such as HVAC systems or conveyor belts is valuable to ensure reduced downtime and peak operating efficiency. Researchers from Imperial College have developed CogniSense; an IoT device that can monitor machine state-of-health accurately, for any mechanism exhibiting cyclical motion. By transmitting a radio signal and detecting the response, a signal corresponding to the motion of the distinct machine components (e.g. gears and bearings) can be captured and analysed. CogniSense even works through walls, and a single device can be used to monitor multiple machines (rather than requiring individual on-board mounting like other existing systems).Luxembourg Institute of Health posted this:

Commercially viable, environmentally sustainable conversion of, virtually any, organic carbon waste into high quality renewable energy products matched to market demand.waste1] Eliminates the need for landfill disposal of organic carbon materials, that produce GHG methane, by converting them into renewable fuels that meet the market demand. 2] by recycling carbon that has been removed from the atmosphere, it creates a net zero carbon cycle. 3] with ~20% of the feedstock, by weight, being used as soil amendment and fertilizer, carbon is continually permanently sequestered from the atmosphere providing a net negative carbon loop. 3] The renewable fuels produced (synthetic diesel, renewable natural gas, high octane gasoline, electrical power, methanol, DEM, green coal, others) are a direct replacement for fossil fuels in virtually every fuel application. 4] Mixed with low quality soils, the carbon char quickly raises the soil quality and reduces the water demand in agricultural production of all types. 5] The process can be modified to produce raw chemical feedstock materials similar to those currently derived from petroleum. 6] The conversion facilities are closed loop and release near zero gases to the atmosphere. No toxic or hazardous chemicals are produced.
