Doing research on mining technologies can be challenging yet a highly rewarding endeavor. Evolving in this fields I found insights on research platforms very scarce and dispersed. Coming the next few minutes, starting from developmental history of mining, we will look at the relevance of our topic of study. We will present the procedure used to explore the concept of Experimental Mines and finally, present the main finding about those research platforms. Mining activities go back into human history. The perpetual race to craft better tools and weapons, has nurtured a perpetual need for better raw materials. “Stone and flint led to copper and then bronze, gold, silver and Iron” End quote, Pliny the elder, historian from the first century, described the perils of ancient mining and argued that the development of ancient mining techniques was driven by the greed of the human condition. After the industrial revolution, mining has reached an unprecedented scale tightly linked to the improvement of productivity using steam-powered machinery. That brought several technological advancements and therefor, the emergence of large-scale mining, what means induced risks for individuals and society. Deadly massive accident in the US in the beginning of the 20th century led directly to the initiation of the first Experimental Mine by the former US Bureau of Mines.
