Catalytic Pyrolysis of Polystyrene in Fluidized Bed Reactor

Plastic materials have a wide range of use due to their light, cheap, easy to process properties and have become the most important commercial materials. For this reason, in our daily life, very large amounts of plastic materials are used and plastic waste is generated in direct proportion to this use. In this study, chemical recovery of polystyrene (PS) which is one of the important plastic wastes by catalytic pyrolysis in fluidized bed reactor was investigated. Liquid product formation and distribution of matter were investigated in the fluidized reactor with inert sand particles at constant nitrogen flow rate in the temperature range of 350-550 oC. The obtained liquid products were analyzed by GC-MS and the product distribution was determined. At the end of the study, it was observed that the temperature had a significant effect on the formation of liquid products and at least the liquid product at 350 oC was obtained at 500-550 oC. The percentage of PS in the liquid product also varied according to the catalyst used.
